Épinal's largest museum, the Musée d'Art Ancien et Contemporain (Museum of Ancient and Contemporary Art) houses almost 33,000 works from the 17th century to the present day, spread over 4,000m².
Like its collections, the museum's building is a blend of the old and the new: the original building, dating from the early 19th century, was remodelled in the 20th century.
A rich collection of paintings
The museum opened its doors in 1828. It was built on the site of a former hospital to house the collection of the Princes of Salm (in the Vosges).
Today, the museum houses major works of European painting, such as the painting Job mocked by his wife by the famous French artist Georges de La Tour (painted around 1630), Rembrandt's Mater Dolorosa (1661) or Naked Faith (1982), a contemporary work created by the eminent British artists Gilbert & George. The museum also features a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
But also archaeology and popular arts
In addition to its pictorial works, the Musée d'Art Ancien et Contemporain boasts archaeological collections featuring Gallo-Roman, Celtic and Merovingian artefacts. Most of them were discovered on local sites. Finally, you can find out more about local culture through objects of decorative art, folklore and everyday life in the Vosges.
Practical information
The Musée d'Art Ancien et Contemporain d'Épinal is open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm; on Saturdays from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 5.00 pm to 6 pm and on Sundays from 2.00 pm to 6 pm.
Rates: €6 (adult); €3 (reduced rate); free for under-18s and students. Family ticket (two adults and at least one child or young person under 18): 8€.
Good to know: The museum is open for free for everyone on the first Sunday afternoon of the month.
